Introducing one of our talented February suppliers…

Happy Saturday everyone!

Now that all of our January boxes are safely in the post and have started arriving in their new homes all around the world, we are looking ahead to a fantastical February with our MAGIC POTIONS theme!

And, because we’re terrible at keeping secrets we’re going to reveal another of our fabulous February suppliers! So without further ado, we are thrilled to announce that our Magic Potions box will include a beautiful, sparkly jewellery item designed and handmade by… Literary Galaxy!

We first started chatting with Jenn from Literary Galaxy about her awesome (and award winning!)book blog. We have been avid readers of her reviews for ages and because we have lots of reading tastes in common, we always keep an eye on what she’s been enjoying! After bumping into Jenn at YALC  in July 2018 and fangirling over her gorgeous new jewellery creations, we knew we HAD to team up and create up an item for a future box. The Literary Galaxy item Jenn has been working on for our Magic Potions February box is super cute and very glitzy. We can’t wait for you guys to see it and it couldn’t be a more perfect fit for this month’s theme!

To see some more of Jenn’s beautiful creations make sure you check out her etsy shop and give her a follow over on Twitter and Instagram.

At Book Box Club we love getting to know the small businesses that we collaborate with, because they are a huge part of what makes our boxes so special!  So we thought we would find out some more about Jenn and her love of YA in our Crafty Q&A.

Literary Galaxy

We know you love books – so tell us about your favourites!

Oh my gosh I could be here forever. So one of my favourites is This Mortal Coil by Emily Suvada! As I mentioned, I love watching zombie/virus type films, and that fascination extends to books too! I actually wrote my undergrad dissertation on virus narratives in movies (titled ‘From H1N1 to Z1N1; Curing and Creating Disease in a Post-Millennial Science Fiction Cinema’ in case you were interested) so this book really speaks to me!

I also LOVE space books, one which is really amazing is Hold Back the Stars by Katie Khan. That book broke my heart…

Honestly there are just too many to list but I talk about them a lot on Twitter and on my blog!

What inspires you to craft and how did you begin?

I always have to keep my hands busy. I love to watch movies and shows but I like to be doing things with my hands at the same time. I used to spend a lot of time on my bullet journal, but always admired handmade shops. I had some ideas of things I wanted to do, and decided to take the plunge and make a hobby something more. I love seeing my pieces in other people’s hands, it makes me so happy that something I’ve made can bring joy to others.

Have you ever had a crafting disaster?

Oh yes. I experiment a lot, I’m one of those people who learns by doing. So a lot of my early projects are awful. I’ve also experimented with foiling to mixed results!

One of my latest experiments I documented on my Instagram stories. I was playing with these filigree bronze settings and using varnish to put book pages on. The first ones worked well but the others ended up with weird blue marks in (probably from the copper), which I didn’t anticipate, but people loved the look of! I haven’t actually put them in my shop yet, but they’ll go in soon.

What do you eat whilst you craft and what do you listen to?

I don’t have anything in particular I eat to be honest, I do drink a lot of loose leaf tea though! I love listening to indie, acoustic type of music. Spotify always recommends me the ‘Sad Songs’ and ‘Life Sucks’ playlists (rude!).

What does your arty area look like?

A mess in all honesty! I live in a small flat and we converted the tiny spare bedroom into my office. I quickly filled it and now it’s just, overflowing. I have two trolley things that I fill with the supplies I’m currently using and wheel them out to my living room so I can watch TV whilst I make things. I hope to move soon though and have a nice big office where I can work comfortably!

Which of your creations are you proudest of and why?

This is a hard one! I really love my Cruel Prince and Everless bookmarks. I think they really capture elements of the stories as well as the covers of the books (which is what I try to do) and I just really enjoy looking at them. It’s really hard to know if what you think represents a book well will be the same as other’s perceptions. People seem to like them so I think I did okay! The green gem on the Cruel Prince bookmark is meant to represent the green bug on the cover of The Cruel Prince (and The Wicked King!) because finding an actual green bug charm was IMPOSSIBLE. So I like my solution to that.

I also have a TON of ideas and things I just haven’t listed yet… like a Priory of the Orange Tree bookmark (though that might be up by the time I post this!)

Apart from making beautiful things and reading what do you like doing?

I love to write! I’m working on a few projects at the moment, but also I love to blog! I have a book blog here I talk about books A LOT. I also enjoy watching movies, my favourite being zombie, virus – end of the world type films.
