We also have a treat for you guys… we thought we would let you in on one of the many bookish secrets that we have been keeping under our hats. That’s right, it’s time for a cheeky sneak peek into our August TECH TRIBES box.
We’re beyond excited to be collaborating with this particular artist. We have been in love with her work for so long and we are avid followers of her Instagram account which means we are always spying on what she’s been working on! At Book Box Club we like to celebrate and get to know the talented illustrators, makers, crafters and designers who help us make our boxes great so we thought we would get to know our August featured artist a little bit better with our Crafty Q&A….
We know you love books – so tell us about your favourites.
I have a few favourite books. I just can’t choose a world to live in! Some of my favourites include The Never Ending Story and The Name Of The Rose; and then, of course, I find sagas like Harry Potter or The Lord Of The Rings so fascinating.
Which of your creations are you proudest of and why?
There’s no specific creation that I’m most proud of, but it’s true that those that people have told me made them feel something, or the ones that bring me back to a specific feeling myself, hold a special place.
What does your arty area look like?
It looks very nice!… most of the time. I have some prints and paintings set up on my wall that inspire me a lot, and everything looks tidy, until I start working. It’s… a cycle. Haha.
What do you eat whilst you paint and what do you listen to?I don’t really eat while drawing, I get focused and kind of forget to. Regarding to music, it really depends on the overall mood of the piece I’m working on. It goes from my favourite band, The Smiths, to a playlist of motivational Disney songs… so we could say it’s a wide range.
Have you ever had an artistic disaster?
Many times! When painting digitally things tend to go smoothly, but when it comes to gouache or watercolour I’m still a beginner, and messing up a painting when it’s almost finished seems to be a skill of mine.
What inspires you to craft and how did you begin?
I can’t really remember when I began, in my earliest memories I was already drawing. I’m inspired by other artists and what I experience. And then all forms of art, the storytelling of it, whether it’s a book, an image or a melody. I’m also inspired by constantly trying to better myself. But most time inspiration just comes from the most unexpected places.
Apart from making beautiful things and reading what do you like doing?
I also love cinema, playing the guitar, writing, making short films… a bit of everything really!
How gorgeous are Alicia Jo’s imaginative, character drawings? We fell in love with her dreamy style, her doe-eyed characters and all those little touches of magic and emotion in her illustration. And, let’s face it, anyone who works with motivational Disney songs on in the background is a true kindred spirit of ours!
We are lucky to have worked with Alicia Jo once before, on the unashamedly bookish calendar, which we featured in our January Geeks Unite box. We ran a competition to find a whole host of artists to help us with the project and many of you will remember the beautiful fairytale Once upon a Time illustration that Alicia created for the occasion! We have been looking forward to commissioning one of Alicia pieces ever since and our August box seemed like the perfect opportunity! To see more of Alicia Jo’s work check out her stunning Instagram feed.
We are so excited that Alicia Jo will be reimagining the characters from our action-packed August read and that her illustration will feature on an exclusive CERAMIC MUG! The artwork Alicia Jo has created for us is just perfect and exactly how we imagined the world in our featured book. You guys are going to LOVE it!
Alicia is designing this exclusive mug just for Book Box Club members, but you’ll need to be signed up to our August box to get your hands on her creation (and trust us you won’t want to miss out on it!). If you haven’t joined our club yet…now is the time! August TECH TRIBES boxes and Purely Books parcels are available from our website now. As ever, we only have a limited number of boxes available so get yours before they all disappear!
Love, Libby and Kate xx
