Here are just a few things we are especially excited about this weekend…
We are so excited to announce that our November box will contain a beautiful, exclusive handmade item by a UK home and stationery studio, whose cute and quirky style has left us with a burning desire to redecorate our homes and offices!
We know you love books – so tell us about your favourites.
My favourite book that I’ve read over and over again is Captain Corelli’s Mandolin by Louis de Bernieres. We had an excerpt read on our wedding day so that book is really special to me. Recently, I’ve enjoyed reading Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine and Robert Webb’s How to be a Boy. I also loved Nikesh Shukla’s The Good Immigrant. I really identified with a lot of the essays and it was a really thought provoking read.
Which of your creations are you proudest of and why?
I have really enjoyed customers’ reactions to my pin designs. They’re little pieces of wearable art that people really can really connect with or collect to encompass all aspects of their personalities. I absolutely love when customers share their experiences of this with me and have had some lovely messages of people telling me how they found inspiration or a kick up the bum from my ‘if you’re looking for a sign, this is it’ pin which is a totally amazing feeling.
A mess! I’m lucky enough to have a converted loft space as a studio space at home which I have crammed full of all things Sparrow and Wolf. I have a huge architect’s planner chest, which I use to store all of my gift wrap and packing tissue and I pack all of my orders on top of it. I have some huge plywood shelving on the walls where I store my cushions and all of my craft fair displays. Big rolls of fabric and lots of photo ‘props’ are in the corners of the room and it’s a bit of an ‘organised chaos’ room really, but I love it.
What do you eat whilst you paint and what do you listen to?
I’ve got a total sweet tooth and often snack on Haribo sweets or slightly healthier snacks like grapes. I love to listen to podcasts while I work. I usually listen to My dad Wrote a Porno, the Adam Buxton podcast, serial or the Allusionist which is all about etymology. My favourite music is a real eclectic mix from Bjork to Kendrick Lamar to Harry Belafonte.
Have you ever had an crafting disaster?
I’m a big believer in ‘give anything a go’ and often dive into sewing or crafting projects with no idea of how to do it… So these types of projects don’t always have the prettiest results! It’s all part of the experimentation stage and helps me learn how to do things better. I’m quite clumsy too and recently spilled some fray stopper glue onto a finished cushion cover and ruined it… Oops!
What inspires you to craft and how did you begin?
My day job as a freelance designer can sometimes involve working on projects I have no personal interest in or which aren’t very creative, so I started my own company for a creative output where everything I make is exactly everything I’m interested in and passionate about!
I think I had a job which involved working on a lot of instruction manuals producing technical drawings when I started Sparrow and Wolf… so I was definitely in need of a creative project! I saw a call for artists from George and Sara at the Poundshop who were looking for designers to create something beautiful that could be retailed for £1 at their pop up shop in Selfridges. I had an idea for making gift wrap with my origami drawings on and I had them printed to submit for the shop. these were my first product. It was an absolutely amazing feeling to see something I’d designed in the windows of Selfridges and I was hooked and wanted to expand my collection.
Apart from making beautiful things and reading what do you like doing?
You may see from my travel inspired products that I have a real travel bug. I love to explore the world as much as possible, whether it’s epic adventures to the other side of the world or a quick weekend trip to the countryside or another city. My husband is a musician and that means that we get to go to a lot of cool festivals too which is my other favourite pastime. My absolute favourite festival is Glastonbury, there’s nothing else quite like it but Shambala Festival comes a close second so if you spot me in a muddy field some time, come say hi!
This November, all recipients of our Book Box Club SMUGGLERS AND THIEVES box will be treated to a simply beautiful Sparrow and Wolf designed fabric item, inspired by our featured read.
Working with Cherie, from Sparrow and Wolf on this particular item has been so much fun. We are so lucky to be able team up with such creative and talented people, who help us to bring to life our themes with their creations. This mystery item has turned out even better than we could have imagined; it goes perfectly with our November theme and we think you guys are going to love it!
If you haven’t joined our club yet… now is the time! November SMUGGLERS AND THIEVES boxes and Purely Books parcels are available from our subscriptions page. As ever, we only have a limited number of boxes available so get yours before they all disappear! Here are some reasons why you won’t want to miss out on this box:
THE BOOK: Our November featured read is a courageous quest for survival in a water-logged world…It follows a young woman who stows away on a ship, kidnaps the Captain’s daughter and attempts to smuggle her across the ocean. This book is definitely full of action but the most brilliant thing about it – for us – is the beautiful writing. It’s raw, emotional and thoroughly compelling (think Sarah Crossan or Patrick Ness meets Treasure Island or Peter Pan!).
This gorgeous new release YA hardback is one of the prettiest books we’ve ever set eyes on and will be accompanied by a signed bookplate from the author. We can’t wait for you all to read it too!
THE GOODIES: As well as a fabric item designed exclusively for our members by Sparrow and Wolf, our November box will be a treasure trove crammed with goodies inspired by some of fiction’s most memorable smugglers and thieves! We are delighted to announce that ALL OF THE ITEMS IN THIS BOX WILL BE EXCLUSIVE TO BOOK BOX CLUB, meaning that you’ll need to be subscribed to get your hands on any of this gorgeous loot! If you’re a fan of Leigh Bardugo and Peter Pan you will not be disappointed.
